4 of the Best Things to do Around Niagara Falls (On the New York Side)

rachc986

Since Covid-19 has restricted travel to Canada, more and more people have been visiting Niagara Falls on the New York side. There is much debate as to which side is better. I've been to both sides, and I think both have unique qualities. On the Canadian side, you get the full view of the horseshoe of the falls. However, on the NY side, you are very close to the top of the falls and you can really see the amazing force of the water plummeting over the side.

There's also some pretty cool things to do around Niagara Falls on the NY side to extend your trip a bit. Here's my recommendations as a personal travel planner:

1. Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours: This is great activity for the adventurous type. You'll be able to ride a powerful jet boat through the rapids of the Niagara River. The rapids range from Class I to Class V. The tour guide will point out the Class VI rapids, however, you don't ride in those as they are too dangerous. Oh also, a frequently asked question is if there is a chance of the boat going over Niagara Falls. The answer is no! You are downstream of the falls.

2. Devil's Hole State Park - If riding in the rapids is a little to much for you, another option is a hike that has beautiful views overlooking the Niagara River.

3. Old Fort Niagara - The fort is built at the inlet of the Niagara river and Lake Ontario. You can relax by the water, walk around the fort, and take a guided tour!

4. Gabriel's Gate - End your trip with some classic Buffalo Wing's in Buffalo, NY!
